Well, I have grown up being Catholic all of my life and I feel that I know all the ins and outs of my faith. I knew of the martyrdom and persecutions but what I did not know, and what quite struck me, was that you do not have to die to be a martyr. As I learned in Subiaco, there were many persecutions at the time but others wanted to give their life in a different way and that was through hermitage. I found it quite interesting that those hermits dedicated their life to just being in the presence of God. To me, living in a cave such as Saint Francis and Saint Benedict did, seems a bit extreme but looking past that it makes you wonder how they were truly invested in doing God’s work. I think if they were able to spend years or days in a cave, I should be able to make some sacrifices of my own.
