If anything this experience has refreshed my memory on the little details that go along with being a Catholic. Such as the sacraments; but most intriguingly, the significance of the saints. Saints have always been a mystery to me. I was confused on how saints were not seen as idolatry, but after some tours, I think I understand their prominent existence in the Catholic church. Just as Jesus was sent as the embodiment of God, saints were also a model for us humans to follow and emulate. What’s the best thing about saints? They weren’t perfect, Just. Like. Us. Jesus was also created human so that we could relate to God, but let’s face it, it seems like he was pretty much perfect all the time. The saints though? They were not always that great, which I think allows me to relate to them more. For example, Saint Francis of Assisi was basically a spoiled little brat before he found God. He had all this fancy jewelry and dyed clothing, but then one day through the grace of God, he let go of all material objects. He learned to trust in God and just focus in the present, living his life as though he were already in heaven with Him. I know it’s cliche, but he truly has become my favorite saint. I aspire to let go of societal expectations and all things material. He was so happy with so little and he had so much faith. I will carry his story, as well as the stories of other saints we learned, for the rest of my life.
