Cathedrals and Basilicas are dedicated to individuals that have pleased God and positively impacted the state of Christianity. As God is viewed as being completely present within each building, they are places in which one can connect with God. Within the past few weeks in Rome, I have become more aware of the significance of art and architecture have on Catholicism. Every time I walk inside a basilica in Rome my mindset completely changes. My negative thoughts clear away as I notice God’s presence. A reason for this is because of the artwork that is placed inside. Each Cathedral and Basilica is filled with some form of art. Some are of extreme detail while others are of great simplicity. No matter what, each art piece provides a powerful message. They are what uplift people and bring the Bible to life. As a visual person, it is much more impactful for me to see and connect with biblical artwork than merely analyze a biblical text. Based on my experience, religious architecture and the art that exists inside the architecture are the sources of a finding a strong connection with God.
